NOMADICS All human body movements - from simple, every-day actions to complex athletic and dance skills - are based upon five fundamental movement dynamics of Coordination, Flexibility, Strength, Endurance and Balance. The development of each of these movement dynamics is the key to complete physical conditioning. No single exercise, dance or athletic activity addresses all five of these movement dynamics in an efficient and balanced way. The NOMADICS exercise system answers that need. NOMADICS are a unique synthesis of athletic and dance exercises, physical therapy techniques, and meditation practices from around the world. A truly comprehensive exercise system consisting of four distinct movement forms, Nomadics effectively develops each of the five fundamental movement dynamics. In addition to their physical benefits, the Nomadics exercises also have a psycho-spiritual effect. Research findings in the fields of somatic psychology and psychoneuroimmunology indicate that training the body for strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and balance simultaneously develops those same qualities in the mind. In other words, psychology may be accessed through physiology. Utilizing the Nomadics movement-meditations, we can work on our minds by working on our bodies.

Nomadics Instructional Videos and DVDs
|
There is one instruction video for each of the the four Nomadics exercise forms. The videos are one hour and twenty minutes long and are excellent teaching tools. Each video shows the form two times. In the first part of each video the form is demonstrated at the speed at which it is normally practiced. During this demonstration, comments are given regarding the fundamentals and philosophy of the Nomadics system. During the second part of the video the same form is again demonstrated - at a slower pace - and detailed instructions are given regarding each of the postures and movements in the form.

If you are a musician, typist, massage therapist, carpenter or anyone else who works intensely with their hands, you are aware that your hands are your most important tools. While it is essential to keep those tools in good condition, research has shown that many people regularly complain of weak, stiff and aching hands. The most common methods for dealing with these ailments are struggling through the pain, uneducated attempts at massaging the hands, and hope that the condition will eventually pass. Such painful conditions, however, usually do not pass but instead worsen over time. The problems of stiff, sore and weak hands may be easily and rapidly treated through a simple hand and forearm conditioning program called Healthy Hands. Combining self-therapy massage techniques with a variety of strengthening and flexibility exercises, the Healthy Hands program produces strong, supple, pain-free hands and forearms. The Healthy Hands program is easy to learn and takes only 10 minutes to self administer. In addition to its healing and strengthening benefits, the Healthy Hands program develops an extraordinary degree of awareness and sensitivity in the fingers and hands. The Healthy Hands program was developed by Martin Gray based on 20 years of helping people with chronic hand and forearm problems. Martin is an advanced yoga teacher, dancer and juggler with a professional background in exercise physiology, kinesiology, neuromuscular massage and Rolfing-style bodywork. In the Healthy Hands video Martin shares the insights and techniques he has learned from healing and strengthening many hundreds of hands. Background information on the development of the Healthy Hands program...For many years I was a professional movement and massage therapist specializing in the treatment of muscle and tendon injuries of the forearms, hands and fingers. My interest in these matters had started when I began to experience pain in my own wrists and hands. Seeking an explanation for the pain, I consulted with orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine doctors. These physicians asked what I did with my hands. Upon learning that I did strenuous massage for several hours a day and also juggled for another two hours, the doctors suggested that my pain resulted from overuse syndrome. They recommended that I limit the amount of strenuous work I did with my hands. This advice was very difficult for me to follow, however, given the fact that I derived my livelihood from working with my hands. I decided to try another approach to free my hands from pain. That approach was to increase the flexibility and strength of my hands, and to begin a consistent program of self-massage of my forearms and hands. I also undertook a detailed study of the anatomy and kinesiology of the lower arm in order to better understand the precise location and causes of my pain. Within two months of beginning these practices my wrists and hands were entirely free from pain. Next, in order to more fully gauge the effectiveness of my approach, I began to teach the exercises and massage techniques to other people who worked with their hands. The results were extraordinary. Dentists, musicians, surgeons, sculptors, massage therapists and many other people who made their living with their hands all experienced rapid and lasting benefits from doing the Healthy Hands program. Besides alleviating pain, the exercises also promote increased suppleness of the hands and thereby a greater ease and efficiency of movement, whether it be for piano playing or dental surgery. The Healthy Hands video/Healthy Hands DVD is the result of years of experience treating the aches and stiffness of my own hands and those of hundreds of my massage clients. Combining self-therapy massage techniques (such as neuromuscular and Rolfing style massage ) with a variety of strengthening and flexibility exercises, the Healthy Hands program produces strong, supple, pain-free hands and forearms. The Healthy Hands program is easy to learn and takes only 10 minutes to self administer. In addition to its healing and strengthening benefits, the Healthy Hands program also develops an extraordinary degree of awareness and sensitivity in the fingers and hands. The one-hour Healthy Hands video was photographed using multiple video cameras located at two different angles relative to my hands. Because of these camera angles, each exercise and therapy technique is clearly demonstrated and simple to follow. |
